Begin by Selecting Correct Spring Wire Gauge
Torsion springs come in various wire gauges with varying strengths. Listed below are the most common residential wire gauge sizes. Select the appropriate wire gauge for your replacement spring by measuring 20 coils on your existing spring and matching the value to the chart below.

Garage Door Torsion Spring Introduction
Over the past 40 to 50 years, the most common type of spring installed on new garage door builds is the torsion spring. Torsion springs are more common for heavier garage door installations (think taller, insulated, windowed, wooden garage doors). Wider and taller doors found in warehouses and commercial facilities use larger torsion springs. At Garage Parts Plus, we stock hundreds of various sized DURA-LIFT torsion springs to keep you and your family safe from a spring malfunctioning or breaking....

How to Determine the Correct Replacement Torsion Spring(s)
There are a wide range of torsion spring dimensions out there! We recommend to always replace broken torsion springs with the same spring dimensions that were previously installed on your door.
How do you figure these dimensions? Watch this handy video for detailed instructions on how to ascertain:
-
Spring wire gauge (purchase by wire gauge)
-
Inner spring diameter
-
Overall spring length
-
Spring wind direction
Presumably, a trained door technician initially installed the spring(s) based on the door manufacturer's specifications. That's why we recommend to replace with the same spring specifications. If you think the wrong springs were initially installed on your door, that's a different story. Click here for advice on how to upgrade your spring to a "high cycle" rated spring.
Winding Rods Included on Every Order
Did You Know? We provide two 12” steel winding bars with EVERY torsion spring order at no additional cost! Besides a wrench to loosen the set screws, this is all of the equipment needed for "do it yourself" torsion spring replacement.
WARNING: HIGH SPRING TENSION CAN CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH.
Adjustments or repairs must ONLY be made by a trained door systems technician using proper tools and instructions.

How to Convert to High Cycle Torsion Springs that Perform up to 3x Longer
New torsion springs are typically specified at 10,000 door open and close cycles. With the average American household opening and closing their garage door(s) 4 times per day, torsion springs last ~7 years on average. If you use your garage door more than average or are interested in a longer spring life in general, we created a conversion chart to upgrade your old springs! You just need to know the specifications of your existing spring(s).
